Interplay is managed by a national Board of Directors that meet monthly by teleconference. Board Members are experts in their field and provide the strategic vision for the company while also advising and supervising Interplay staff on artistic, administrative, financial and legal matters.

Chair: Chris Mead
Chris has a Doctor of Philosophy and First Class Honours Degree from the University of Sydney. His theatre company, ‘kicking and screaming’ has been producing theatre since 2000 and he has worked professionally with most of Australia’s largest theatre companies as a director or dramaturg. In 2003 and 2005 he was the Festival Director of World Interplay, the International Festival of young Playwrights and has been the Curator of the Australian National Playwrights’ Conference since 2004. He is on the Board of World Interplay and is a member of the Artistic Advisory Panel for Company B Belvoir St Theatre, the Rex Cramphorn Bequest Committee and the Playwriting Course Committee at the National Institute of Dramatic Art.
Deputy Chair: Ian Brown (Board Member 2004 - present)
Ian is a Queensland-based writer/performer. His performance writing credits include Drunk & Disorderly, Reading Patrick, Showing A Clean Set Of Heels, Live at Ric’s, and The Valley Member. Representative roles include Hobart Performing Arts Club (1987 & 1988), Metro Arts Artistic Advisory Panel (1997 & 1998), La Boite Theatre Creative Reference Group (2001 & 2002), board member of the Australian Script Centre (2001 - 2005), Interplay (2004-) the programming committee of the Brisbane Writers Festival (2000, 2001 & 2002), the Queensland Premiers Creative Writing Policy Roundtable (2001, 2002) and judge on the Queensland Premiers Drama Award (2002/3, and 2004/5). Formerly the Executive Director of Playlab, Queensland’s peak body for script development and publisher of quality texts for performance, Ian is a new work development specialist and theatre advocate.
Secretary: Susanne Larson (Board member 1991 - present)
Susanne is currently a Senior Manager at Ausfilm. Susanne has a BA (Hons) from the University of California, Berkeley and an MA from Macquarie University. She has a successful background in arts sponsorship, international education, and film and television.
MEMBERS
Michael Austin (Chair 1997-2000, Board member 1990 - present)
Michael is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of N.S.W. and the High Court of Australia with more than 20 years experience. He is currently a partner in a Sydney commercial law firm. Michael is also joint Managing Director of Consolo Limited a public company with diversified investments in shares, property, business and rural pursuits. Michael is also a Trustee of a Charitable Foundation, which distributes substantial benefits to many charities each year. He joined the Interplay board in May 1990 prior to the 1991 World Interplay Festival in Warragul, Victoria.
Henning Fangauf (Board member 2002 - present)
Henning studied German Literature and history at university. From 1980 to 1989 he was engaged as a Dramaturg at several German theatres. Since 1989 he has been working at the Children’s and Young Peoples Theatre Centre in the Federal Republic of Germany in Frankfurt am Main, where he is deputy Director. He is responsible for the department of international exchange and the furtherance of playwrights. Henning has had several books about playwriting were published and he is an international representative of World Interplay and chairman of Interplay Europe. Henning is currently the editor of the Theaterpadagogische Bibliothek of Heinrichshofen Verlag.
Tommy Murphy (Board member 2005 - present)
Tommy Murphy has written eight plays including an adaptation of Marlowe’s 'Massacre at Paris' (ATYP), 'Troy’s House' (TRS in Sydney and La Mama in Melbourne) and ‘Precipice’ which will premiere in 2007. He was writer in residence at The Griffin Theatre Company in Sydney from 2004-6 where he wrote two plays in two years that broke box office records. 'Strangers in Between' won the 2006 New South Wales Premier’s Award for Best Play and is about to embark on a regional tour of Australia. It has been published by Currency Press in a joint volume with 'Holding the Man' which will have new productions this year in San Francisco and Auckland. ‘Holding the Man’ is an adaptation of Timothy Conigrave’s memoir. It will reopen at the Sydney Opera House Playhouse in May after a two sold-out seasons at The Stables.

Tommy is the recipient of a Centenary of Federation Medal, The Australian Capital Territory Young Writer’s Prize and the Sydney Theatre Company Young Playwright’s Award. He trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney where he completed postgraduate studies in Directing.
Suellen Maunder (Board member since 2005)
Suellen Maunder is the Artistic Director and a founding member of Just Us Theatre Ensemble (JUTE), an award winning regional theatre company based in Cairns. Suellen has been an actor, director and writer and her arts management skills include artistic programming, general management, sponsorship, development, strategic planning and project management. Suellen was integrally involved in the development and completion of a major new contemporary arts facility in Cairns. Suellen brings with her a broad knowledge of the theatre industry and has served on the Arts Queensland peer assessment panel and the Cairns City Council Arts and Culture Reference Committee and Regional Arts Development Fund assessment panel. In 2003 Suellen was nominated for Cairns Business Woman of the Year. Suellen is committed to the development of the Arts, particularly professional theatre practice in the regions.
Geordie Brookman (Board member since 2006)
Since graduating from the Flinders Uni Drama Centre in 2001 Geordie has worked as a director, writer, dramaturg and producer and has showcased work in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Edinburgh. In the past four years he has directed for many of Australia’s leading main stage and independent companies. Currently working for Queensland Theatre Company as their Artistic Development Coordinator he is also a director of the “Gang of Five” film production group, Artistic Associate with Fresh Track Productions and in 2002 was the Affiliate Director at Sydney Theatre Company.
Michael Beresford (Board member since 2006)
Michael is an Associate Professor in Theatre in the School of Creative Arts at James Cook University in Cairns. Formerly Artistic Director of HardSun Theatre Company, Michael has directed professionally in Townsville and Cairns for several years. Michael is also a playwright and his produced works include Dump, Body Parts, Ginger Boy and Snap. He has served on the Peer Assessment Panel for Arts Queensland and also the Regional Arts Development Fund.
Madonna Davies (Board member 2007)
Madonna graduated from the James Cook University BA Theatre Course in 1992. Madonna spent a period of time travelling and working overseas after completing her degree. Since returning to Townsville in 2000 she has dedicated herself to working in the region. Madonna has coordinated 3 regional tours from Townville to Mt Isa for Tropic Sun Theatre Company, the 2003 World Interplay (International Festival of Young Playwrights) and the North Queensland Young Playwrights Weekend from 2001 to 2003. Madonna is on the Management Committee of Tropic Sun Theatre Company, and was on the Townsville RADF Committee from 2001-2002. Madonna’s performance work includes six years as an actor with Tropic Sun (2000-2006) and four years with HardSun Theatre (1999-2003).
Cr Jack Wilson (Board member 2004 – present)
Councilor Jack Wilson is the Townsville City Council’s representative on the Interplay Board.
